It's 1907 Los Angeles. Mischievous socialite Anna Blanc could match wits with Sherlock Holmes, but in her world women are not allowed to hunt criminals. Determined to break free of the era's rigid social roles, she buys off the chaperone assigned by her domineering father and, using an alias, takes a job as a police matron with the Los Angeles Police Department. There she discovers a string of brothel murders, which the cops are covering up. Seizing her one chance to solve a crime, she takes on the investigation herself.

If the police find out, she'll get fired; if her father finds out, he'll disown her; and if her fiancé finds out, he'll cancel the wedding.

Anna must choose--either hunt the villain and risk losing her father, fiancé, and wealth, or abandon her dream and leave the killer on the loose.

Review:
PROS:
1. There was a lot about this book that caught my interest at first and I'm not lying when I say I was sold when the synopsis mentioned Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock is one of my favorite tales to read and seeing as there are so many of them, I'm always on the lookout for any other books who tip their hats to the great detective. This one being set in 1907, before women had rights to vote, ankles were NEVER visible and makeup was scandalous, only added the cherry and whipped cream on top. There were so many elements that held my interest while reading the book and I'm excited to let you all know more about it. Let's get started.

2. I adored Anna's character. She was definitely a girl who didn't like being underestimated but also used it to her advantage. She was smarter than the men and women around her thought, cunning, mischevious, and had a good strong head on her shoulders that I found to be a very powerful character trait for a female lead. She was definitely the type of young woman who could handle herself well, fight her own fights, and maybe even start a few along the way. Trouble always seemed to find Anna as she begins getting wrapped up in real-life mysteries and crimes and she handles them with wit, grace, and even a little bit of laughter and a few smiles. She was a spunky girl that kept me entertained as the story progressed and I found myself wishing that Anna was a real person, thinking she'd be a very interesting person to talk to.

3. The setting of this book was just perfect. The descriptions strewn throughout the book never let you forget the time period with their old sayings, slang, figures-of-speech, descriptions of clothing, buildings, ways of travel, trends and so much more that were relevant in the 1900's. It was all so easy to picture in your head and it makes you feel like you're actually there in Los Angeles during that time period when so much change was just beginning to unfold and take place. Anna was a girl with impossible dreams that were unachievable for women in that time so it was a perfect setting and I applaud the author for having a beautiful writing style that fit the tone of this book.

4. Anna tests the waters of social morals and values and it made for a very entertaining read. I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction but this one is pretty high up on the list of my favorites. It reads very easily, especially if you choose to listen to the audiobook which the narrator does an AMAZING job at telling! Her voice was clear, smooth, and had just the right amount of energy to really bring Anna Blanc to life and made it feel as if Anna herself was telling the story. The book had a very nice pace throughout and kept the energy it had from the very first page to the very last. I think Anna is a great example that even though you're a woman living in a man's world, sometimes it takes a woman to do a man's job.

Andrew Day knows nothing of wealth and privilege, but he won a scholarship to study at the most exclusive school in the country, in the town where the mystery, decades later, remains unsolved. There he discovers friendship and danger with the aristocratic Cameron and the beautiful Olivia. But watchful eyes follow him everywhere... Until, one night, he comes across a secret that will change his life. As he begins to unravel what really happened to the Surway fortune, the question remains: who is Lucian Baker?

REVIEW:
PROS:
Source
1. I was first interested in this book when I saw the cover. It looked dark and ominous so it roped me in pretty quickly, making me read the synopsis and leaving me feeling like I just HAD to get my hands on it! I'm such a sucker for a good mystery novel of any kind really so this one was impossible for me to pass up. I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book but I was a little surprised that I liked it more than I was expecting. Especially since I wasn't really in the mood for reading a mystery novel. I'm a mood reader so sometimes that affects my enjoyment of a book. Anyhoo, let's get onto the review!

2. The characters in this book were really well written and developed. Our MC Andrew didn't really belong among the crowd of rich kids and didn't pretend like he belonged either. He mainly kept to himself but made friends easily with Olivia and Cameron. I thought his character was very realistic and although he was a young teenage kid attending an elite school, he was smart, clever, and didn't crack under the pressure of not only being in a strange new place but also with unraveling the mystery of Lucian Baker and the lost fortune of Lyndon Surway. Together with the help of his new friends, Andrew takes on a pretty hefty task of solving this age-old mystery in a way that kept the book entertaining. As he learned the ways of the school, their traditions, the town, the people, it kept the story moving forward and made me get a little attached to Andrew as a main character.

3. The writing was also so well done. The descriptions the author gives made it feel as if you as the reader were actually there and it was detailed but not lagging or info-dumpy. The author has an amazing talent for character development and world-building and that's something I really appreciate, especially when it comes to this book. To be honest, the book didn't feel at all like a debut novel but rather a book written by an author who knows what he's doing. It's been a really long while since I read a debut novel that didn't feel like one with the way it was written. The story was fun and had a certain energy from the very beginning that hooked me in right away. Not to mention that the mystery surrounding the Surway fortune and the mysterious Lucian Baker had my head spinning with thoughts along with the characters.

4. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel as a whole. The reason why I didn't give this book a five-star rating is because while I enjoyed this novel, the energy that we have from the beginning and middle of the book seemed to drop and slow down towards the end. It just didn't have that certain oomph that was present for most of the novel and it slowed down too much. I think if the ending had been a little more exciting, I would have enjoyed it more. It does also end on a cliffhanger that I have mixed feelings about but I haven't quite settled on a feeling about it. It had a good plot, great characters, an entertaining mystery, and had a good narration to it.

A gritty, psychological thriller about a mythic set of sixteen-year-old quintuplets searching for a young boy.

On Whidbey Island, the Gray quintuplets are the stuff of legend. Pixie and her brothers have always been bigger and blonder than their neighbors, as if they were birthed from the island itself. Together, they serve as an unofficial search-and-rescue team for the island, saving tourists and locals alike from the forces of wind and sea. But, when a young boy goes missing, the mysteries start to pile up. While searching for him, they find his mother’s dead body instead—and realize that something sinister is in their midst. Edgar-nominated author M. J. Beaufrand has crafted another atmospheric thriller with a touch of magical realism that fans of mystery and true crime will devour.

PROS:
1. Can we just talk about that cover? It was pretty much the first thing that had me interested in the book and the synopsis only sealed the deal for me. I love a good mystery or psychological thriller so when I read what the book was about, I just had to sign up and hope I got the chance to review it for you guys. Needless to say, I read it, formed my thoughts, and have a few things to tell you about this book. Here's the review:

2. This book starts out in a very mysterious way, first establishing the characters then heading on into the disappearance of the boy and his mother. My first impressions on going into this book was how unique the characters were. The Gray quintuplets were described as kids who were practically a part of the island, they were birthed from the island itself, they belonged to the island and no one else. I was really interesting to hear how the townspeople thought of them and how they came off as being more magical than anything else. It had me hooked on wanting to know more about these teens as they went about searching for the missing boy, intrigued on the air of mystery they had about them.

3. The backdrop was absolutely stunning, that's the only word I can think of to describe it. The whimsical feel of Useless Bay is both enchanting and scary at the same time. The island is known for its uniqueness but also known as the island where everything dead eventually washes up on its shores. The writing only helped to really make the island something that you think only exists in your imagination even though the area is a real place in the real world. You can almost feel the mystery radiating off the book the entire time you're reading it which I seriously LOVED.

The reason why I didn't give this book a five-star rating is because even though I was addicted to the events playing out in this book, the fast pace, the themes, the mystery surrounding literally everything in this book, I did sometimes find the magic in this book and the twists to be a little confusing or unexplained. I had a few questions as to how the magic that connected the quintuplets worked and, well, I didn't really get answers at the end of the book. The twists were fun, though a little random at times, so I would've liked a little more explanations to really make me love this book

Overall, I think this mystery is just a lot of fun, magical, enchanting, and reminded me a little bit of The Vanishing Season meets Spiderwick. If you want a fun, interesting, quick read, then check this one out because it might just surprise you.

A death sentence. A family torn apart. One girl's hunt for the truth.

Seventeen-year-old Riley Beckett is no stranger to prison. Her father is a convicted serial killer on death row who has always maintained that he was falsely accused. Riley has never missed a single visit with her father. She wholeheartedly believes that he is innocent.

Then, a month before the execution date, Riley's world is rocked when, in an attempt to help her move on, her father secretly confesses to her that he actually did carry out the murders. He takes it back almost immediately, but she cannot forget what he's told her. Determined to uncover the truth for her own sake, she discovers something that will forever change everything she's believed about the family she loves.

Review:
PROS:
1. I always love a good crime novel and so when I found this little book, I just had to get my hands on it. It sounded like a book that we just begging me to read it and I couldn't step away from it. The synopsis just sounded so intriguing and since I just love shows like Criminal Minds and Cold Case, there was no way I wasn't going to read it. Here's the review:

2. I seriously loved all of the characters so much. I really thought that Riley was such an independent character and didn't give up on her father no matter what anyone told her. She was very strong even when things got really rough and she wasn't one to back down when things got hard. She was smart, cunning, clever, and a problem solver. I loved her character so much and watching her grow as a character was just so awesome. I also really liked her parents, Jordan, Mathew, Mr. Masters, Detective Vega, and every other character in the book. They were all just so interesting and I never really knew who to trust fully or be weary of. The cast of characters was just so great and it's been a while since I've read a book with such a great group of characters. Jordan was a lot like Riley, Mathew being just so darn cute and lovable and they had me fully invested in the book the entire time I was reading.

Source
3. I think this book has so many twists and turns that at one point, I just gave up trying to figure out for myself who the real killer might be. My suspicions on the characters were all over the board and while it had me asking a million questions about the cases, the characters motives, and their actions, I still really loved reading every single page just wanting to find out what was really going on and who actually committed the murders that Riley's father has been wrongly convicted of, or so the family thinks. This book seriously had me going back and forth on so many things, thinking maybe they already had their criminal behind bars, that the real killer framed Riley's father for some reason, that Riley's father knew more about the murders than what he lead everybody to believe. This book had my brain getting some extra exercise while reading.

4. I just loved how the plot and storyline played out and continued to unfold new secrets, lies, and truths that sent Riley on a chase for the truth and turned her world upside down again and again. Riley quickly finds out that the people she thought she knew better than anyone are keeping a lot more from her than she could possibly imagine and the plot and pace really make the book so exciting and addicting to read as the story progresses and it gets better and better as it goes on. I could probably talk forever about how much I really loved this book and I highly recommend it if you love a good mystery or crime novel that's part psychological thriller.

The reason I didn't give this book a five-star rating is because
it did take a little bit to get into the book as it was a little slow in the beginning but nothing too bad that it bored me. This book picks up the pace quite quickly about 75 to 100 pages in and it's a roller coaster ride from there.

Seventeen-year-old Nina Barrows knows all about the Thief. She’s intimately familiar with his hunting methods: how he stalks and kills at random, how he disposes of his victims’ bodies in an abandoned mine in the deepest, most desolate part of a desert.

Now, for the first time, Nina has the chance to do something about the serial killer that no one else knows exists. With the help of her former best friend, Warren, she tracks the Thief two thousand miles, to his home turf—the deserts of New Mexico.

But the man she meets there seems nothing like the brutal sociopath with whom she’s had a disturbing connection her whole life. To anyone else, Dylan Shadwell is exactly what he appears to be: a young veteran committed to his girlfriend and her young daughter. As Nina spends more time with him, she begins to doubt the truth she once held as certain: Dylan Shadwell is the Thief. She even starts to wonder . . . what if there is no Thief?

Review:
PROS:
1. Once again, I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review as part of the blog tour for it. I love a good thriller either in movie form or book form and I especially adore a good mystery with suspense and excitement for what will happen next. I thought this book sounded really interesting which is why I was so excited when I snagged a spot on this blog tour and I couldn't wait to read it. Here's the review:
PSST!! GIVEAWAY BELOW!

2. I really liked the writing style of this book. The story is told in dual POVs, one following Nina our main character and the other following Warren to get a better insight on the main storyline but also gather details from both sides. I really like thriller stories that are written like this because I feel like it keeps me more interested in the story, especially if one POV is told from the criminal's view. Because there isn't a lot going on for most of the story, the dual POVs was a good way to keep the story going without seeming to drag on and on before finally getting to the ending.

3. It was a quick book to read and one that I would recommend if you want a bit of a slower paced mystery thriller type story that mainly focuses on cracking the case of a criminal's identity and questioning if your suspicions are just a trick of the mind or solid fact. It was a bit too slow for my personal taste but for those who just want something a little more laid back but still holds enough mystery to keep you entertained, try this one out and see what happens.

CONS:
1. I'm sorry to say that I didn't really care for any of the characters. Nina, our MC, seemed to be a quiet type of character that only spoke when it was necessary but didn't really stand out to me. Warren was a little more outgoing and a bit of a risk taker but there was very little development with both characters. They seemed a bit flat and their actions were questionable throughout the story which I found distracting as I was reading.

2. The storyline itself wasn't bad, it was quite interesting actually. The events leading up to the ending, however, fell a little flat for me personally. There didn't seem to be a climax as the story started wrapping up and most of what happens in the story seemed to go on a little too long, not to mention it wasn't as exciting as I was hoping for. There were a couple of 'twists' to the story that didn't actually surprise me but it did add a little something to keep the book interesting.

Overall, it's not a book I'd read again but it is one that I would recommend to someone looking for something new to read or if you love mysteries and thrillers or are in the mood for a murder story without all the gore.
