The last time Lexie Stein saw Dalton Reyes he lay in a pool of blood, hovering somewhere between life and death. Now, five years later, he’s the new guy in her high school.

What happened between then and now is a mystery Lexie is afraid to explore. Just one lie uncovered from her past can cause the house of cards she’s so carefully constructed to come crashing down around her. And Dalton is the key to that past.

She doesn’t need her grandmother’s warnings to convince her that Dalton means trouble. But the bond they shared as kids seems to have only gotten stronger, transforming into something wonderful and powerful.

When Dalton opens up about the intervening years and what they mean for his future, Lexie is determined not to let him get away a second time.

PROS:
1. Okay, so, I'm not gonna lie, I was first interested in this book because of the cover and the really cute guy on it. There, I said it. But I'm a sucker for pretty fonts so I couldn't walk away that easily, now could I? Anyhoo, when I read the synopsis of the book, I was pretty much sold when the first line told me about someone laying in a pool of blood and I was like, "Yeah, I need to read that." I just had to know what was going on and how that pool of blood came to be so I jumped at the chance to review it. Here are my thoughts:

2. I didn't expect to like the book as much as I actually did and part of that came from the characters themselves. I thought Lexie was pretty closed-off from a lot of people and never hesitated to hold people at a distance for fear that they might leave her. She had a lot of trust issues because of her parents and found it hard to tell anyone including her friends anything true about her. She was a habitual liar, even acknowledging that fact, and she couldn't help but tell lies all her life because of what happened when she was younger for fear she might be judged. It was nice to see Lexie slowly open up to Dalton because he knew the truth about her. He was shy, a bit of a loner, but also didn't want to waste his life by playing things safe and never getting out to experience the world. He was passionate about music and very open to new things but also struggled to open up about himself for fear of being pitied. I like the interactions between Lexie and Dalton and thought they were relatable in some ways.

3. I liked the pace of the story even though the beginning was a little bit sudden in the way that I felt kind of thrown into the story. It was easy enough to get into, however, and as the book plays out, we learn about who Lexie really is, what happened to her and Dalton when they were kids that sent both their lives spiraling, as well as watch both characters grow and experience new things. The book went a lot deeper than I was expecting, even at times being heartbreaking and just plain sad. It was very touching and dealt with darker issues than I see in most YA novels and I really liked that.

4. Not only was this book deeper, darker, and more meaningful than I was expecting, it also talked a lot about living your life to the fullest and making every minute count. I also really liked that it was diverse in the way of both racial diversity and subject diversity. I haven't read a lot of books in the past that deal with the medical conditions that this book talks about for one of the characters and it was nice to see because it made the book stand out for me. I think this book has a lot to offer and I have to say, it makes me excited to see what Katie's next book has in store.

The reason I didn't give this book a five-star rating is because while I liked most things about this book, the romance did get a little cheesy or a tad bit dramatic for my taste. It also felt like the book ended in a tad bit of a cliffhanger even though the story was pretty much wrapped up. The climax was also a bit disappointing after everything the characters went through so I would've liked a little something extra just to bring the final punch. Overall, I was pretty impressed with this book and I think it's a promising YA debut and has me excited for more from the author.

  3. Loved your review of this novel, Anissa! I'm like you, sometimes I just fall for the cover (or the really cute guy on it) and it's perfectly alright to admit that ;) I haven't read a book about a habitual liar before so that is what makes this one unique to me. And I don't actually mind a little extra cheesiness in my novels, so I think this could be a really good romance for me :)

    1. Lol yay I'm not alone! XD Sometimes the covers just get to me! Anyhoo, I thought the book was unique as well because of the main character being a habitual liar which is why I liked it a little more. I hope you enjoy this book when you get around to reading it!
