Genre: Thriller, Mystery

An ambitious future surgeon on his psychiatry rotation is assigned a patient who reveals to him information about an organized plot to control the population. His pursuit of the truth leads him to become a psychiatric patient in the same facility.

Dan Greenberg was a promising medical student who was derailed by Catherine—a bizarre schizophrenic patient whose delusions about patients in danger at hospitals all around Chicago were startlingly specific.

Drawn by both curiosity and compassion, Dan investigates, discovering that they were exactly where Catherine said they would be. Who are these people? Why are they in danger? Are they connected with each other?

While incarcerated, he joins forces with an unlikely ally Jake—who murdered his family during a drug-induced psychotic break, but is also a charming hacker with street smarts who creates a plan to get Dan’s life back. In his attempts to do so, he threatens to uncover a conspiracy to track and manipulate the population by a cabal of influential people who will do anything to keep their plot secret. He will learn just how far powerful people will go to stay in control, and the high price of the truth.

Schizo takes readers on a wildly unexpected journey into the what-ifs of medical science. Written by an Emergency Physician, Ilene B. Benator crafts situations that are terrifying, yet all too believable.

Millie Alvarez is a college senior with dreams of being a best selling science fiction writer like her favorite author, sci-fi mastermind Luke Danielson. She fantasizes about dating Rod, her handsome, young writing professor, who has a fan base of his own.

Of course no one knows this but her two best friends, Fran and Mike. In the real world, Millie is anything but a success. She always gets casted in the worst roles in her college's musical productions, has a single subscriber to her writing blog, and struggles to be with anyone but Fran and Mike. She even avoids meeting Trent, an exchange student from London who matches with her on the dating app Charmed. Sam always wants to hang out with Millie, but he isn't her type; he's too skinny and happy and won't stop asking Millie about all her favorite things.

But things spiral out of Millie's control when Fran moves out of their dorm room to live with her sister and her estranged dad won't stop calling her to make amends. To top it all off, the pain inside of Millie's chest is worsening. Millie must decide if she's ready to face everything head on. Can she do it? Is she stronger than she thinks she is? All Millie knows is that her life is one big mess that she cannot seem to escape.

PROS:
1. I thought this book sounded like it was going to be a good one when I first read the synopsis because it sounded like a nice contemporary read that would potentially be a little more mature character wise and less juvenile. I was really excited to read this book and I'm happy to say that it was better than I was expecting, especially since there are such good reviews of this book on Goodreads and I was afraid I might not like it as much as everyone else seemed to. Here's the review:

2. I really liked our main character, Millie, because she was very relatable and a Hispanic female lead. She was introverted, grew up in a single parent home with her mom after her dad left her when she was a kid and she harbored anger towards him ever since then. Throughout the book, she struggles to trust people again, specifically guys whenever they showed any interest in Millie because she was hurt by her dad. Millie thought people only came into her life to leave a second later so she held most people at a distance to avoid getting hurt by them.
She also lived with anxiety which I thought was a nice character trait since a lot of people suffer from anxiety and I'm also a huge supporter for mental illnesses being in more YA or NA literature, it's a topic I find is ignored in most books and I appreciate that this book had that element. It doesn't dive into the very depths of Millie's anxiety, however, but it does make it known that she has anxiety and takes medication for it. I also really loved Millie's friends as they were really fun and very supportive of each other in all aspects of life. I also loved the love interest, Sam, though I would have liked to get to him a little more since I didn't get to know much about him really but what I got was satisfying enough.

3. This book has a nice pace, it's not too slow but not too fast and it plays out quite nicely as the book progresses. It was also quick and easy to read that had a sweet and slow-burning romance, little to no drama as well as some humor added into the mix. It wasn't very descriptive which I liked but more straight to the point which I also really enjoyed especially since it's a contemporary novel that didn't have a ton of drama and the writing style kept the story moving without rushing through it. I would recommend this book to someone who just wants a nice and realistic read such as FANGIRL was that also has themes of writing books and aspiring authors which I think is fitting since it's currently NaNoWriMo.

The reason why I didn't give this book a five-star rating is because the second love interest, Rod, really didn't have a strong enough presence in the story. It seemed like he was just kind of there, popping up every now and then and then disappearing and being forgotten for a majority of the book. He seemed to be more like a backup plan to add interest to the book when I honestly think the story was strong enough to carry itself without Rod. It also irked me that he was Millie's professor and I don't care how young he was, it was gross. A teacher and a student? Nonono. I also didn't care for how some of the dialogue was laid out. It felt like I was reading text messages instead of reading an actual conversation the characters were having:

Millie: “Upstairs.”
Sam: “What's upstairs?”
Millie: “Nothing interesting.”
Sam: “You seemed upset.”
Millie: “I wasn't.”

Overall, I did enjoy this book and though it wasn't perfect, I still liked it and give it a thumbs-up for being a very well-written book that I was able to really like for what it was, what it had to offer, and I'm glad I was able to read it when I did. I think this book is very fitting for fans of
FANGIRL as previously mentioned but also fitting for fans of ELEANOR & PARK.

Charlotte survived four long years as a prisoner in the attic of her kidnapper, sustained only by dreams of her loving family. The chance to escape suddenly arrives, and Charlotte fights her way to freedom. But an answered prayer turns into heartbreak. Losing her has torn her family apart. Her parents have divorced: Dad's a glutton for fame, Mom drinks too much, and Charlotte's twin is a zoned-out druggie. Her father wants Charlotte write a book and go on a lecture tour, and her mom wants to keep her safe, a virtual prisoner in her own home. But Charlotte is obsessed with the other girl who was kidnapped, who never got a second chance at life--the girl who nobody but Charlotte believes really existed. Until she can get justice for that girl, even if she has to do it on her own, whatever the danger, Charlotte will never be free.

Rating:
PROS:
1. Not going to lie, when I first saw the cover of this book I thought it was going to be a cute contemporary about falling in love and making mistakes. When I read the synopsis, however, I was a little shocked to find out what this book was really about. I just had to read this book once I discovered the kinds of things this book would potentially be tackling and goodness was I in for a little bit of a surprise. Here's the review:
2. This book is a story of recovery. We follow our main character Charlotte who's been held captive for four years by her kidnapper and follow her journey to recovery as she comes home to a family she feels she no longer recognizes. Charlotte was a strong character that was emotionally unstable and scarred from the things she went through over those four years that she was being held prisoner. Charlotte's family is not the one she remembers when she returns home and that causes a lot of emotions to fly for both her and her parents and twin sister. Charlotte was quite a heartbreaking character as we learn more about her experiences and discover how her family fell apart soon after her disappearance. This story is both heartbreaking and inspiring as the characters in this book have to overcome guilt, sorrow, grief, anger, and forgiveness of each other.

3. The themes of family and recovery are very apparent as the story goes on. The emotional rollercoaster ride that the characters have to go on as the story progresses isn't an easy one by any means. With every chapter of the book, the truth about the things Charlotte went through and the ways her family dealt with her disappearance are heartbreaking, frustrating, and weigh heavy on the characters. It affects their choices, their emotional balance and surrounds them as they struggle to come together and fix the broken bonds between them all. I loved the theme of moving forward in life when it seems like nothing is going right and that it isn't easy at first. I think this is a very important topic in books and I loved that this book highlighted it many times.

4. This book isn't a light read, in fact it's quite heavy, heavier than I anticipated. I found myself having to put the book down every few pages in order to catch my breathe and remind myself there's still some good in the world. This book was literally taking my breath away as I read it and I totally recommend it if you love a good and realistic story about overcoming your worst nightmares. I would not recommend it to younger readers since this book does deal with rape and abuse so if you're uncomfortable with reading about those topics, probably wait until you're ready. I would say this is for fans of such books as THE LOVELY BONES or STOLEN.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book in the most heartbreaking way and I think this was a very well written story about a touchy subject. The reason I didn't give this book a five-star rating, however, is because I felt the ending was a little rushed and could've used a couple more chapters to wrap the story up a little better. Though this book did have a few moments when I was shocked and my mouth literally dropped in surprise. And so many feels.

About The Author:

Winner of the 2015 RITA Award for Best First Book

Clara Kensie grew up near Chicago, reading every book she could find and using her diary to write stories about a girl with psychic powers who solved mysteries. She purposely did not hide her diary, hoping someone would read it and assume she was writing about herself. Since then, she's swapped her diary for a computer and admits her characters are fictional, but otherwise she hasn't changed one bit.

Today, Clara is the author of dark fiction for young adults. Her debut, the super-romantic thriller RUN TO YOU BOOK ONE: DECEPTION SO DEADLY is the winner of the prestigious RITA Award for Best First Book.

The RUN TO YOU series was named to several Best Books of 2014 lists, including RT Magazine Editors' Pick. The two-book series was originally published as a six-part serial by Harlequin Teen in 2014 (First Sight, Second Glance, Third Charm, Fourth Shadow, Fifth Touch, and Sixth Sense). By popular demand, the six-part serial is now available as two full-length books: DECEPTION SO DEADLY and DECEPTION SO DARK.

Her next book is AFTERMATH, a dark, ripped-from-the-headlines contemporary about a girl who returns home four years after being kidnapped, only to find her family has fallen apart in her absence. To fix her broken family--and help find the body of her captor's first victim--the girl must first heal herself. AFTERMATH is a story of hope, healing, and triumph over tragedy, perfect for fans of ROOM and THE LOVELY BONES. Available November 15th 2016 from Merit Press.

Clara's favorite foods are guacamole and cookie dough. But not together. That would be gross.

Genre: Sci-Fi

Toledo police detective Audrey Vorkink has a rep for getting things done. She might look like a middle-aged soccer mom (complete with bobbed hair), but she works hard and unwinds even harder. One night, as she’s meeting with her edgier-than-it-sounds knitting group, a hit-and-run accident turns deadly right outside the building. But something’s fishy about the missing driver, something positively…inhuman.

Audrey can run down any criminal, but what if this one’s from another planet? Can she bring the bad guy to justice? Is she going insane? Will she ever manage to get a decent haircut?

Find out in this snarky police thriller meets extraterrestrials (maybe) by Carrie Harris, author of BAD TASTE IN BOYS and DEMON DERBY.

Book excerpt:

“Get your hands off me, soccer mom!” Demetrious White yelled as I closed the handcuffs over his wrists.

My partner, Detective Ronda Ross, let out a snort of amusement without moving from her spot flanking my left shoulder. Her gun remained steady, trained on the grimy floor of the porch just shy of the perp’s feet. I muffled a snicker. Out of all the insults I’d heard in my almost twenty years on the force, “soccer mom” was my favorite so far.

“You have the right to remain silent,” I said, my voice wavering only slightly with restrained laughter.

I ran through the rest of Miranda at top speed. It wasn’t like White hadn’t heard it before, and he wasn’t listening anyway. He was too busy trying to get a rise out of me while I droned on about his rights.

“Man, you got nothin’. Why you gotta do me wrong, soccer mom?” he said. When he got no reaction from that, he took a different tack. “I bet you’re a killer in the sack. Maybe you and I could take a little time in the backseat of the squad car. I got an anaconda I’d like you to meet. Give you a little sump’n-sump’n, you get me?”

I got him all right, but this wasn’t anything I hadn’t heard before. By this time, I’d finished with the pleasantries and started moving him toward our police issue sedan. I hated that car—it looked like it should belong to a washed up G-man—but I was looking forward to stashing White in the backseat so I could relax. The walk of shame to the car was always a tense moment. Ronda was a fairly solid woman, and I wasn’t exactly a waif, but most of the lowlifes we arrested had us on size. White was no exception. If he was going to make a break for it, this was the time.

As if on cue, he lurched forward, trying to pull his arms out of my grip.

“Let me go, b****!” he shouted. “F***ing lesbian cop. Suck my d***!”

Strong-arming him wasn’t going to work when he had about a hundred pounds on me, so I didn’t try to wrestle him back into line. Instead, I gave the chain between his wrists a sharp yank as he pulled away. End result: he nearly yanked his own shoulders out of the sockets. Skinned his wrists something fierce on the sharp metal too. He let out a yelp of pain as all the fight went out of him. I shoved him the last few steps to the car while he yowled about police brutality. It was a relief to close the door behind him, although that only made him shout louder.

“Well, that escalated quickly,” observed Ronda, relaxing from her ready stance. “Soccer mom.”

“Don’t you start too,” I warned. “I’ll put you down.”

She rolled her eyes. “You couldn’t take me if you invited the entire nursing home as backup.”

“So first I’m a soccer mom, and now I’m the leader of a geriatric street gang?”

“What can I say? You’re a woman of many talents, Audrey.”

“Now you’re laying it on thiiiick.”

We paused for a moment to grin at each other. It wasn’t so much about the banter—that was fun and all—but more about the fact that we felt good about this case. We’d built it up together, brick-by- brick. We had physical evidence up the ying yang, all fully documented and quintuple-checked. We had the murder weapon, fingerprints, and DNA results. We had witnesses with statements that almost agreed for once. No case was ever open and shut, but if Demetrious White didn’t go down for the murder of Ronald Montrose, I was going to eat my shoes. It felt good. Almost good enough to distract me from the cracks about my appearance. I’d just gotten my hair cut, and so far, reactions hadn’t been what I’d hoped for.

As we got into the car, I said, “And by the way, this is not soccer mom hair at all.”

Book #2 of the Untiled series
Publisher: Merit Press
Published: December 2nd, 2016

For once, Maggie McKendrick just wants to control her own life. Her overbearing Hollywood director father has it all planned out for her: UCLA, law school, then working as an entertainment lawyer, preferably for him. But Maggie has other, more creative-spirit friendly, plans. Namely, Thrippletons School of Fashion and Design in England, and then onto becoming a designer, preferably a wildly successful one. The big snag in her plan? Getting it past her dad.

A movie shoot takes the family to the Scottish Highlands for the summer, and closer to Maggie’s dream school. While there, she runs into the charming Preston Browne. Maggie is intrigued and decides to bend her no guys rule—instituted after her ex used her to get close to her dad. Forced to keep secrets from Preston in order to protect the future plans she’s made, Maggie finds herself falling for the tall Brit. And for once in her life she knows that he’s interested in her, not her Hollywood connections. When Maggie's father blackmails her into dating his lead actor, she isn’t left with a choice. The biggest problem isn’t having to date hunky, mega-hottie, Ben Chambers. No, it’s praying she doesn’t lose Preston in the process.

Excelling at her dream school, Maggie’s personal life is a tangled mess. She needs to decide if living a lie is worth losing Preston or chance going against her father and facing his wrath. When the tabloids expose the truth of her fake relationship with Ben, Maggie's world is thrown into a tailspin. Ultimately, Maggie must find the courage to take risks and forge ahead on her own path.

Review:
PROS:
1. After reading the first book in the contemporary series- which can be read as stand alones and out of order by the way- I just had to hurry up and read this sequel. I thought the first book was so much fun and a lighthearted read that I was really in the mood for and I'm happy to say that this book was no exception. I've been reading more 'serious' books lately and I've been needing some light reads to break things up so I picked this one up and I'm excited to review it for you all! Let's get started!

2. This book follows a girl named Maggie who has a passion for fashion and dreams of becoming a fashion designer despite how much her father will hate her ideas of attending a fashion school. I thought Maggie was a very talented character and knew her passions and wanted nothing to do with her father's world of glitz and glam and Hollywood. She was a very strong character as well but kept people at a distance for fear of who her father is and her brother Marc was the same way. I thought she was a very determined young girl who was both afraid of her father but also craved the moment when she could prove him wrong and go against his abuse of the family. I also loved that we get to see some of the characters from the first book in this one, such as Evie and Edmund as well as having the love interest be Preston, their best friend. I loved all the characters, they all made me laugh and I felt so connected and dedicated to the characters that it made me feel like I needed to finish the book ASAP.

3. I loved the pace of the book, the fluffiness to it, and the romance was totally swoon-worthy and didn't feel too cheesy or dramatic which I really loved and was right up my alley. I love a good romance but only if it's done right and flows with the rest of the plot which was the case with this book. The romance was only a part of the entire story, it also dealt with how abusive and delusional Maggie's father was to her and the family, how Maggie had to learn how to trust people again and become confident in her own talents as well as figure out how to start over in a sense as the story progresses. It was lighthearted read that had some heavier topics sewn in and I loved reading this book because of that.

4. The themes of family and friendship and second chances were highlighted many times throughout the book and I think this contemporary series is a great one for fans of Anna and The French Kiss and 13 Little Blue Envelopes. I would also recommend it to anyone curious about the fashion and film industry if you're willing to deal with a power-hungry director of a father trying to tear apart Maggie's life. Needless to say, I'm really hoping there's a third installment in the works for this series!

I didn't give this book a five-star rating because while the pages flew by too fast for me- I WANTED MORE- I was hoping for just a tiny bit something extra to really make the story perfect. I'm not quite sure what would have made me give this book a five-star rating but maybe a small plot-twist might have done the trick. This book wraps up nicely and is just a joy to read for me. Basically, you should read it too. Like, right now.
