Review:

PROS:

1. Upon first reading about this book, I thought it sounded super cute and would be a breeze for me to read since I adore any book that has to do with video games, graphic art and anything nerdy. This book was a combination of all three and I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy and read it. I was really excited for this book going in and I'm so happy I got that chance to read it and review it for you all! Let's get on into the review! 

2. Special thanks to the author for sending me an e-copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! To start off, I really loved Tessa's character! Not only was she an introverted young woman working in a heavily male-dominated line of work, she was also an ambitious and determined Latina woman working hard to be recognized for her skills in coding. She wanted to work hard and earn respect for what she did and by continuously pursuing her career, she challenged herself in many ways that were at first hard for her such as being social with people, making friends and getting out of the house and out of her comfort zone.

3. I also liked that the relationship evolved quite nicely in my opinion between Tessa and her roommate Adam. At first, they're nothing more than roommates, not even friends. As they both continue to search for their place in their line of work and hone in on their coding skills, they go from roommates to good friends and eventually, a sweet romance blossoms between them. It was entertaining and swoon-worthy to watch their relationship evolve and made for an easy and fun read throughout the book. The characters were also very fun and lively, showing their support for each other in many parts of the book that I really enjoyed.

CONS:

1. I did have a few problems with this short chick-lit read, however. My first issue was that the initial first kiss in the novel was a bit random. It felt a little out of place, like it was kind of just thrown in and never mentioned afterward. It felt too quick and easy especially since Tessa was very shy and introverted and it felt like too sudden of a move for her character to make at the time it happens. 

2. I also would have loved a bit more fleshing out of the supporting characters as I really enjoyed seeing them pop into the story and wanted a bigger presence from them. They added a lot to the book and I wanted to see more of them as I read. I also would have liked a bit more romantic development. I know I said earlier that their relationship developed nicely, which it did, but the romantic FEELINGS on both their parts felt a little out of left-field, too quick, almost over night. There wasn't that slow simmering build-up of romantic feelings that I personally love seeing in romantic reads. If I had seen more of that, I think I would have absolutely LOVED this book. 

Overall, it was a quick and easy read, perfect to relax with. I think if you're a reader who loves a good geeky romance story, then definitely pick this one up and see what you think! I do plan on reading the sequel to this book, which I will be posting a review of later in the month so stay tuned for that. I did enjoy "Level Up" and I hope more readers out there can enjoy the book either as much or more than I did.

Review:

PROS:

1. I thought this book looked like it could be a fun little contemporary read especially since I honestly think that any contemporary novel that has something to do with a boy band is worth reading. It's just way too entertaining sometimes. I've come across too many books that had to do with a boy band and ended up being very entertaining that now, I jump at the chance to read yet another. Which is what happened here. I'm happy to be reviewing this book for you all so I hope you enjoy!

2. I really liked the characters from the beginning. I thought our MC Aileen was a smart girl and very brave for taking a job halfway around the world at such a young age. She was feisty and although she was small and didn't come across as too intimidating, she was a force to be reckoned with and didn't back down too easily from a challenge. The boys of UK Crush were also entertaining, often smothering Aileen in hugs and messing with her like a good group of guy friends should. They looked out for her and often expressed that they appreciated her company, even giving her the nickname of Tink because she was petite. The relationship they had with each other was often fun and full of laughs.

3. I also appreciated the diversity of the characters, how they were all different races, came from different walks of life and cared about each other like a family. I also liked the setting of the book being in Japan, though I would have loved to have seen a little more scenery and descriptions of the things and places they saw since I personally love books set in Korea, Japan, China etc. I think it creates such a colorful atmosphere and I would've liked a little more of it in this book.

CONS:
1. While I liked some things about Aileen's character, I did find her to be a bit of a crybaby about half the time which got pretty annoying. She cried with every emotion and though she admitted she was a crier, it just got a little tiresome. I also didn't like how she went from a shy and quiet character to being a flirt so quickly. It felt a bit extreme and unrealistic of a development for her character, not to mention that she only seemed interested in one of the band members yet she wasn't upfront about her feelings at all and kissed all of them, not seeing the damage she was doing or the big deal.

2. I also didn't buy the romance between Aileen and the two love interests. It was too much along the lines of insta-love, especially since they were confessing their love to Aileen after only knowing her for a WEEK. It was too rushed, out of place, and felt forced to hurry along the romance. It needed way more development and the love triangle just didn't work for me.

This book was a quick read and I think some people might end up really loving this book but I just wasn't much of a fan. I still recommend this book if you just want something quick and easy to read to entertain you or if you're looking for a contemporary story to try out. PLEASE NOTE: This book has some MATURE content and is in fact for New Adult audiences.

PROS:

1. I thought this book sounded like it was going to be a good one when I first read the synopsis because it sounded like a nice contemporary read that would potentially be a little more mature character wise and less juvenile. I was really excited to read this book and I'm happy to say that it was better than I was expecting, especially since there are such good reviews of this book on Goodreads and I was afraid I might not like it as much as everyone else seemed to. Here's the review:

2. I really liked our main character, Millie, because she was very relatable and a Hispanic female lead. She was introverted, grew up in a single parent home with her mom after her dad left her when she was a kid and she harbored anger towards him ever since then. Throughout the book, she struggles to trust people again, specifically guys whenever they showed any interest in Millie because she was hurt by her dad. Millie thought people only came into her life to leave a second later so she held most people at a distance to avoid getting hurt by them. 

She also lived with anxiety which I thought was a nice character trait since a lot of people suffer from anxiety and I'm also a huge supporter for mental illnesses being in more YA or NA literature, it's a topic I find is ignored in most books and I appreciate that this book had that element. It doesn't dive into the very depths of Millie's anxiety, however, but it does make it known that she has anxiety and takes medication for it. I also really loved Millie's friends as they were really fun and very supportive of each other in all aspects of life. I also loved the love interest, Sam, though I would have liked to get to him a little more since I didn't get to know much about him really but what I got was satisfying enough.

3. This book has a nice pace, it's not too slow but not too fast and it plays out quite nicely as the book progresses. It was also quick and easy to read that had a sweet and slow-burning romance, little to no drama as well as some humor added into the mix. It wasn't very descriptive which I liked but more straight to the point which I also really enjoyed especially since it's a contemporary novel that didn't have a ton of drama and the writing style kept the story moving without rushing through it. I would recommend this book to someone who just wants a nice and realistic read such as FANGIRL was that also has themes of writing books and aspiring authors which I think is fitting since it's currently NaNoWriMo. 

The reason why I didn't give this book a five-star rating is because the second love interest, Rod, really didn't have a strong enough presence in the story. It seemed like he was just kind of there, popping up every now and then and then disappearing and being forgotten for a majority of the book. He seemed to be more like a backup plan to add interest to the book when I honestly think the story was strong enough to carry itself without Rod. It also irked me that he was Millie's professor and I don't care how young he was, it was gross. A teacher and a student? Nonono. I also didn't care for how some of the dialogue was laid out. It felt like I was reading text messages instead of reading an actual conversation the characters were having:

Millie: “Upstairs.”

Sam: “What's upstairs?”

Millie: “Nothing interesting.”

Sam: “You seemed upset.”

Millie: “I wasn't.” 

Overall, I did enjoy this book and though it wasn't perfect, I still liked it and give it a thumbs-up for being a very well-written book that I was able to really like for what it was, what it had to offer, and I'm glad I was able to read it when I did. I think this book is very fitting for fans of FANGIRL as previously mentioned but also fitting for fans of ELEANOR & PARK.

1. There's nothing I love more than reading YA novels that are about different cultures, especially ones that I don't know much about myself. I've always thought different cultures and countries were so cool to learn more about so when the opportunity came up to potentially review this book, I needed to jump on it! I just want to give a HUGE thanks to the author for the review copy as well as The Review Chain and all the awesome people involved! Here's my review:

2. I seriously LOVED the characters so much! I thought Nithya was such a smart and determined character who always wanted to make her family proud and treasured them and all they've done for her. She's always dreamed of becoming a doctor since she believes it's been programmed into her from birth and she's very driven and doesn't allow herself to get distracted from her goals and her school work. I also thought James was a very nice character since he was equally smart, driven, but also believed that someone's life should be decided for themselves and not what others expect from you. I thought Nithya and James had very good chemistry and both came from good families, had plans and goals for their lives and were logical in their choices. Basically, I loved them like a cute little bunny rabbit. I also loved their families, especially James' brothers who had me laughing out loud with their interactions. Just such a great cast of characters here!

3. I really loved getting insight on Nithya's culture since I don't know much about Indian customs or traditions. I've always been interested in their culture and I think this book is a nice introduction to a new culture without feeling like it's too much information at once. I found myself looking things up online that the book mentioned such as the food, the items, articles of clothing, just to get a better idea and learn more about Nithya's culture and it was really interesting. I appreciated that Nithya's family instilled in her to never forget who she was or where she came from. I think readers who like learning about new cultures from around the world will want to pick this book up.

4. I just loved the writing and the beautiful backdrop this book had set up. The descriptions of things were very beautiful and did a great job describing that the Indian culture is made up of so many colors, Nithya's even saying so herself at one point in the book. I thought the pace was nice as well and it was so easy, fun, and fast to read. I was pretty much hooked from the very beginning of the book, wanting to know what happened next to the characters and ultimately how everything wrapped up. It's been a little while since I've fallen in love with a book and this one had my heart a flutter. Annika has answered the call for diverse romance and I applaud her for doing so!

The reason I didn't give this book a five-star rating is because I would have liked to see a little more of the second love interest. Nithya isn't in a love triangle exactly but there is another boy her family has their eyes on for her. I thought there wasn't enough of Nishanth and felt he kind of just popped up whenever Nithya was with her family and then went back into being non-existant when Nithya went about her life back in her apartment. I would have loved to get to know more about him and his family. Overall, I just adored this book from the very first page and highly recommend it!

PROS:

1. I was sent an e-copy of this book by YA Bound Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. I was first interested in this book when I saw the beautiful and almost sad looking cover. The colors really roped me in and when I read the synopsis, I thought it might actually be worth reading since it sounded like it would have some good ole teenage drama. However, it was much more than just that. And not necessarily in a good way. Here's the review: 

2. I'll start off with saying that it totally contains a lot of angst and isn't an easy book to predict. There were so many twists and turns in this book that it had my mouth dropping pretty much every other chapter. I was just waiting to see what the next crazy thing was that would happen to the characters and what secrets and lies would come up to the surface. Needless to say, I had no idea where this book was headed and it kept me on the edge of my seat for the most part. As a side note, this read is definitely for readers 18 and older.

CONS:

1. Oh boy, where do I even start? I guess the characters is what I'll be reviewing next. I did NOT like a single one of them except for one being Amanda. She was the only character that I found a very loyal and trusting friend who was so sweet and her romance with Jordan made my heart flutter. I'm quite interested in the next book in this series since the story will be following them instead of the main characters in this first novel. I couldn't stand any other characters besides the previous two mentioned. Just no. Olivia made the worst decisions, she was too much of a brat, and she flipped too easily back and forth between Dustin and Ryan who were both HUGE jerks. Dustin made Olivia feel guilty for things when they were his fault, Ryan came onto Olivia WAY too hard, his mouth needing a serious washing out with soap and disinfectant, and Em was probably the worst friend in existence. Everyone except Amanda and Jordan had no character development and were all backstabbers, liars, and let their emotions control them, not to mention they were bratty and full of themselves.  

2. The other thing I didn't like was how rushed this book was without even having much of a plot. The whole love-triangle was the main focus and it just got way too unrealistic way too fast to add anything great to the story. Especially since the book ends in a cliffhanger and leaves things still very unclear which makes me question how this story will be wrapped up in the sequel since it will be Amanda's story instead. 

Overall, this book wasn't for me in any way but if you're looking for a book that will have you tearing your hair out but still addicted to teenage drama, then go for this one. I think this book is more so for fans of 90210 or even Pretty Little Liars, neither of which I've watched in the past but I've gathered enough info to know they hold D.R.A.M.A. Some people love this book, some not to so much so it's really a toss-up depending on your personal taste in books. For me, it just wasn't a winner.

PROS:

1. So I had so many people recommend Colleen Hoover books to me ranging from her very first book to this latest one. I was really interested in this book in particular because of it's setting in the city of Dallas, my home town and it's art theme. Two of my favorite things combined into one story. Sounds like a winner to me! I thought this book would be a great start to getting into Colleen Hoover's books and so I picked it up at the bookstore a few weeks ago and finally got around to reading it. So here's the review!

 

2. First off, I really liked all the characters in this book. They weren't my favorite group but they definitely had really great development. I thought that they were all pretty realistic though a little too dramatic at some points. I really liked Auburn in the end after I got to know her character and past a little bit more. She's a very determined character who's just a little afraid of change. I was also really interested in Owen's character because he seemed like a very dynamic character and was very creative but also seemed to be hiding a lot from a lot of people. The side characters were great as well and I really enjoyed reading about them.

 

3. The writing for this book was so beautiful and incredibly praise worthy! I knew that Colleen Hoover was a very hyped author but I didn't really understand why until I read this book. Her writing was so beautiful and she described some of the most dull things in such an amazing way and is definitely on my ever-growing list of favorite authors. I loved how she used the simplest ways to build up her characters and story and she was able to weave everything together seamlessly and it was absolutely amazing how she was able to do that. Needless to say, I'm already obsessed with her writing!

 

4. I really enjoyed all the mystery and the twists and turns behind the characters and storyline. I couldn't help but become invested in the story because of how much I wanted to find out what was going on and what certain people were hiding from each other. Secrets came out and confessions were made and overall, this book had me on the edge a few times. 

 

5. Lastly, I really loved that the book included pictures of some of the art work mentioned in the book and I was amazed by the art work. The colors were beautiful and it was really cool to see the actual paintings that Own created and I thought it just brought the book to life a little more. It was a really great read and I highly recommend this book if you want to get into some of Colleen Hoover's books but don't know where to start.
