Every summer, Rose goes with her mom and dad to a lake house in Awago Beach. It's their getaway, their refuge. Rosie's friend Windy is always there, too, like the little sister she never had. But this summer is different. Rose's mom and dad won't stop fighting, and when Rose and Windy seek a distraction from the drama, they find themselves with a whole new set of problems. It's a summer of secrets and sorrow and growing up, and it's a good thing Rose and Windy have each other.
In This One Summer two stellar creators redefine the teen graphic novel. Cousins Mariko and Jillian Tamaki, the team behind Skim, have collaborated on this gorgeous, heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful story about a girl on the cusp of her teen age—a story of renewal and revelation.

Review:
PROS:
1. I had been hearing and seeing this book for a while now and I was recommended this graphic novel over and over again by multiple people so when I stumbled upon it at my library, I thought now would be as good a time as any to finally check this one out and see what it's all about. I think it's a good summer read with a quirkiness to it but let's get more in depth with my thoughts on it. Here's the review:

2. As always, the art comes first. I really loved the art in this graphic novel for many reasons. (1) The color pallet was really different in a sense that the main colors used were blue and purple. Black was a rarely used color anywhere in this book and I thought that was pretty cool. Many shades of purple and blue were used to create shadows and light sources and I thought it was different to see the rare use of black in a graphic novel. (2) The art was also pretty detailed with not only the characters but with of course the surroundings. The scenery had forests and roads, buildings and oceanic scenes and I loved how everything was drawn so detailed without being too much for the eyes to handle and too busy. I liked that the attention of detail also focused on the characters and their features. From what I've read, most graphic novels tend to be a little lighter on detail with their characters and it was cool to see a difference in this book.

3. I really enjoyed the characters in this book as well. I thought that our main character, Rose, was a normal teen trying to have another great summer and still grow up a little in the process. She and her best friend, Windy, just wanted to have as much fun as they possibly could together until they had to leave again and wait a whole year to do it again. I liked that Rose started to want to hang out with the wrong crowd seeing as that's a very relatable topic. She started getting into things she shouldn't be getting into and in the process, started acting out and changing in a way that her friend Windy and her family didn't like. This book focuses a lot on summer firsts and lessons though, I didn't think it really resolved any of the things Rose had to struggle with. I'll talk more about that in just a second. Overall, the characters were interesting enough.

4. Overall, I thought it was a very quick read. I read it while eating breakfast so I think it's a fast and entertaining book to pick up for the summer season. I wouldn't say I loved it but I was okay with everything for the most part and how it all played out. It's a great coming-of-age story and I recommend it to anyone who wants a good graphic novel with that type of storyline.

The reason why I didn't give this book a five-star rating was because of a couple of things: (1) There is some adult content in this book such as slut-shamming and Rose didn't really learn anything about why that's wrong and why she shouldn't say certain things. Her friend Windy corrected her a few times but Rose still didn't learn any valuable lesson about that topic. Rose also didn't have any type of reaction when it came to her summer of revelations and didn't really develop as a character because of that. (2) The book also didn't have a plot. It just felt like you were following these characters through their summer without any climax or real storyline. It was a bit slow and didn't keep me invested in the story. I was simply reading instead of becoming immersed with what was going on.

Music Matching Monday: Red Queen

Sorry for skipping the last two Mondays! It's been post crazy lately and I've barely been able to schedule everything. Anyway, this week's bookish song pairing is for Red Queen! Almost instantly when I first heard this song, I thought of this book and Mare. Her character lives in a world that's separated by the color of their blood: Red and Silver. When Mare discovers she could be the key to blurring and breaking the social boundaries of the people, she tries to hide her newfound power in order to keep the world from changing. She has to struggle with finding who she can really trust as well as prove herself to the people around her that she's not weak enough to back away from a fight. In the process, she learns there's a lot more to herself than she knew and that change just might be what ends up serving her well. I really loved how strong Mare became as the book progressed and how things kept getting thrown at her and all she did was own up to the challenge, no matter how hard it might be. She became tired of taking hit after hit and decide that in order for her to really be free, she had to accept who she really was instead of pretending and hiding from the world.

Review: The Heir by Kiera Cass (The Selection #4)

The Heir by Kiera Cass (The Selection #4)
Rating: PG
Genre: Dystopian, Romance
Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Page Count: 342
Book #4 of The Selection series
Publisher: Harper Teen
Published: May 5, 2015

THIS IS A FOURTH BOOK IN A SERIES= SPOILERS!
Twenty years ago, America Singer entered the Selection and won Prince Maxon’s heart. Now the time has come for Princess Eadlyn to hold a Selection of her own. Eadlyn doesn’t expect her Selection to be anything like her parents’ fairy-tale love story. But as the competition begins, she may discover that finding her own happily ever after isn’t as impossible as she always thought.

Review:
PROS:
1. I was so excited when this book was first announced because I was kind of sad knowing that last year, The Selection series would only be a trilogy. When the news came out that this fourth book would be coming out, I was stoked! I had the release date and everything marked on my calendar and Ii was especially interested when it was revealed that the book would follow the King and Queen's daughter. After I finally read the third book in the series, I was even more excited to know who the queen was. Anyway, enough babbling and here's the review!

2. I actually liked Princess Eadlyn's character a bit more than I probably should since, like her mother, she has some attitude issues. I really liked that Eadlyn was very independent, feisty and determined to run her country one day without a husband at her side. She didn't think love was for her and that played a part in her stubbornness of going through with her Selection. She was a bit bratty at times and didn't seem like the nicest person ever and she was also spoiled. At least she had enough reason for that, however, considering she is the one and only princess and the heir to the throne. She's hard to love but like her mother, she's trying. I really loved the other characters as well in the book. Speaking of America Singer, I really loved that she was a mom  just trying to make everything easier on her daughter by passing on her own experiences from her Selection. Maxon seemed like the coolest dad ever and I also enjoyed the diversity of the suitors chosen to compete in the Selection. Of course I have my favorites: Kile, Hennri, Hale, even Erik though I don't know if he even counts.

3. I really liked how much fun it was to read this book. The previous three book in this series where reminiscent to the Bachelor whereas this book, wasn't that far off from reminding me of the Bachelorette. Obviously, this book had some boy drama and Princess Eadlyn had to put her foot down a few times and put a few people in their place. There was some drama and some heartache, even some denial of quite possibly being in love, one thing Princess Eadlyn really doesn't want to be one bit. It was an entertaining read and a fun one. This series is known for being a series only read for some good dramatic entertainment but this one was possibly a little calmer than the rest of the series.

4. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I'm super excited to see what the fifth and final book in this series has to offer! If you haven't yet read this book and are maybe a little hesitant to pick it up, I would say to still give this one a shot. Just make sure you have plenty of caffeine, chocolate and maybe even a happy, stress free movie to pop in when you need a break from Princess Eadlyn's bratty attitude. I flew through this book, couldn't put it down, and I'm excited to see what happens next!

The reason why I didn't give this book a five-star rating was because of how frustrating Princess Eadlyn could be. Again, she was the only daughter, heir to the throne and spoiled because of that but there were a few times I wanted to shake her and tell her to get it together. Hopefully she gets a little less bratty in the next book ;)

Review: Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen

Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen
Rating: PG
Genre: Contemporary, Fiction, Chick-Lit
Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Page Count: 417
Stand Alone
Publisher: Viking Juvenile
Published: May 5, 2015

Peyton, Sydney's charismatic older brother, has always been the star of the family, receiving the lion's share of their parents' attention and—lately—concern. When Peyton's increasingly reckless behavior culminates in an accident, a drunk driving conviction, and a jail sentence, Sydney is cast adrift, searching for her place in the family and the world. When everyone else is so worried about Peyton, is she the only one concerned about the victim of the accident?
Enter the Chathams, a warm, chaotic family who run a pizza parlor, play bluegrass on weekends, and pitch in to care for their mother, who has multiple sclerosis. Here Sydney experiences unquestioning acceptance. And here she meets Mac, gentle, watchful, and protective, who makes Sydney feel seen, really seen, for the first time.
The uber-popular Sarah Dessen explores her signature themes of family, self-discovery, and change in her twelfth novel, sure to delight her legions of fans.

Review:
PROS:
1. I've been a huge fan of Sarah Dessen's books ever since I first stumbled upon her book titled "Just Listen" when I had nothing to read and the library was my oyster. I still remember thinking to myself, whoa, this girl's written a lot of books! when I decided I'd give the book a go and see how it went. Eleven books, one shelf and two years later, I now own all of her books, read every single one of them and fell in love over and over again with her characters, stories and realistic lessons about discovering who you are and finding a place where you belong. Here's my review!

2. Obviously, I loved the characters in this book so much! I really loved Sydney's character for multiple reasons. (1) She really felt so real in a sense that the things she thought, felt and said resulted from her feeling invisible and feeling like whatever was on her mind didn't matter because of the lack of attention her parents gave her. (2) Instead of begging for it, she shied away from attention like it was the black plague, not wanting it or even welcoming it. It felt stranger to her whenever someone paid attention to her or even looked her in the eye when she had something to say. (3) She was also very selfless. She was constantly trying to help out her friends that finally made her feel like she had a place she belonged. She also cared about her family, despite the fact that her parents pretty much left her to raise herself and figure out things on her own and acted like they didn't have time for her. She was an all around great and relatable character and I fully enjoyed that about Sydney.

3. The character development was also amazing. Besides Sydney, her friends and family had so much great development that you could understand why they were making the decisions they were making and why they acted the way they did within just a few pages of reading about them. Sydney's parents were over-protective about Peyton and his situation and once I got the whole backstory, I could understand her parents' way of thinking and why they didn't seem to ever have time to deal with Sydney. Her friends were also really great and had such great personalities and made a very interesting group of friends that welcome Sydney into their little posy with just a blink of an eye. All the characters also had big parts in the story and none of them faded into the background of the story like most side characters tend to do.

4. The story is very plot and character driven in my opinion, more so characters, but I really loved the events that played out throughout the book. There were so many ups and downs in Sydney's life as she struggled to get her parents to understand the full picture of what exactly Peyton's mistakes ended up doing as a whole and how she also had a hard time excepting that the spotlight was beginning to make its way to her. There were times she felt stuck between her parents and her brother and times when she felt her friends didn't understand what she was feeling or going through. It was such a relatable story about common problems teens today face on a daily basis and something I myself have gone and are going through. I guess that's why I loved it so much.

5. Overall, I seriously loved this book so much and it's now one of my top five favorites from Sarah Dessen and possibly replaces "Just Listen" as my top favorite book from her. I highly recommend this book as well as all of Sarah Dessen's beautiful books. If you're not exactly sure what to read for the summer or haven't picked up a book by Sarah Dessen, I highly recommend this book and I know you will not be disappointed!

June TBR!

Hello my friends! Here's my TBR for the month including this month's TBR challenge! For the past few months, I've been challenging myself to read more books on my TBR so I decided to do a monthly draw out of my TBR box a piece of paper that has the challenge I'm to complete sometime during the month. I thought it was a fun idea and it really has helped me to read more books I still haven't read yet. Here's the challenge:

Read a book set in a place you've always wanted to visit.

For this challenge, I decided to go with two books instead of one. I chose to read Anna and The French Kiss and Lola and The Boy Next Door both by Stephanie Perkins. I probably won't read both but they both count for the challenge as well as for my monthly reread pick! Yes, I'm probably cheating since I've already read these two, but at least I'm reading, right?
Here's the rest of my TBR for the month:

Lola and The Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Being Nikki by Meg Cabot (Airhead #2)
The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand
The Heir by Kiera Cass (The Selection #4)
Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen

If you want to join in on my TBR challenge, feel free to do so! I draw one every month! Love you guys!
